As explained in our previous post, we stayed in Punta Cana during our trip. The focus of our stay was resting, and snorkeling. We both had some great snorkel experiences before, and were pleasantly surprised by what the Dominican Republic had to offer.
We booked our snorkeling trips with Dressel Divers, a local dive shop located on the beach in Punta Cana (near the Iberostar hotel). We did our research before leaving and they are a responsible diving and snorkeling company, with attention for the environment and the stability of the coral reefs – something very important to us.
Looking back we are very pleased we booked our snorkeling tours with them. The trips we took were well organised and guided.
The Dominican Republic is certainly a good spot to go snorkeling. The pictures below give you a good idea of what you can expect when snorkeling. We even saw a reef shark on one of our snorkeling trips, unfortunately no clear pictures of that one. It was a blacktip reefshark (Carcharhinus melanopterus), circling near our boat when we were getting in the water. It swam away as soon as we dived in, but it was thrilling to spot it from above!
Snorkeling was also possible right from the beach in Punta Cana, which is always an added bonus on lazy beach days. We had a little reef not to far out from our hotel. Fish were abundant and if you take out a bit of bread from breakfast and feed them you’ll have a great time 😉
